180 Days Outside the UAE: Residence Visa Calculator

UAE Residence Visa 180 Days Calculator: 6-Month Rule

Key points

  • Article 59 of Cabinet Resolution 65 of 2022, the regulation under Decree-Law 29 of 2021: the permit is void if the stay abroad exceeds 180 consecutive days. The law counts days, not calendar months.
  • The count is continuous. Any entry through passport control resets it. The law sets no minimum stay.
  • Golden, Green and Blue residence holders can enter at any time while the visa itself is valid.
  • If you miss the deadline, you need a re-entry permit. ICP issues it in six emirates, GDRFA in Dubai.
  • You can apply only from outside the UAE and only after 180 full days abroad. ICP decides in 2 days and gives 30 days to enter.
  • The fee is AED 100 for the smart service plus a fine of AED 100 per 30 days. ICP describes the base of that fine in two ways, so the calculator shows a range.
  • If ICP refuses, you start a new visa from zero: entry permit from a sponsor, medical test, Emirates ID.

A sponsor can also cancel a visa by application: see UAE residence visa cancellation.

A UAE residence visa becomes void once you spend more than 180 days in a row outside the country. ICP and GDRFA send no warning. Enter your exit date and the calculator shows the last day you can still enter.

Your visa type

Re-enter no later than

We count cautiously: the day you left is day one. The regulation says “more than 180 consecutive days” and does not say whether the departure day counts, so plan your return with a margin. If your visa expires earlier, that date governs instead.

How to count the 180 days

Article 59 says "exceeds more than (180) one hundred and eighty consecutive days". It does not say if the exit day counts or if the day you return counts. No authority has clarified it.

The calculator reads it cautiously: the exit day is day one, so the last safe entry day is exit date plus 179. The lenient reading moves the date one day later. Book the flight with a margin.

Example: you left on 1 April 2026, so you need to enter by 27 September. Counting six calendar months gives 1 October, which is past the limit.

If the visa itself expires before that date, the expiry date is your deadline.

What resets the count

Any recorded entry resets it. The regulation says "consecutive" and u.ae says "continuously", so an entry ends the absence and the next exit starts a new count. One day in the country is enough.

Transit in the sterile zone of an airport does not count as an entry. You do not pass passport control, so the border system records no crossing. We infer this from how entries are recorded; neither authority has published a statement on transit.

Who can stay outside the UAE longer than 6 months

Article 60 of the regulation and u.ae list the exceptions:

  • the foreign wife of a UAE citizen;
  • residents sent abroad for medical treatment and their companions, with a medical report certified by UAE health authorities;
  • students enrolled at institutions abroad who hold a valid residence visa. The portal adds: as per Dubai rules, check with ICP for other emirates;
  • public sector employees sent by their employer for training or to offices abroad, and their families;
  • domestic workers accompanying Emiratis who study or receive treatment abroad, and those working for staff of UAE diplomatic missions;
  • investors holding valid residence visas;
  • any other person excluded by a decision of the ICP chairman.

The ICP service card adds Golden, Green and Blue residence holders and the husband of a UAE national woman if she sponsors him. They may enter at any time while the residence is valid.

Investors should be careful. The regulation contains the exception. Most practitioner guides from 2026 say the authorities do not apply it to a standard two-year partner visa or to a property visa below the Golden threshold. Neither authority has described how its system treats these files, so check your visa status before you travel.

The freelance permit and the virtual work visa are not on the list, so the general rule covers them.

Re-entry permit after 6 months outside the UAE

ICP, all emirates except Dubai. The service: Permit to Stay Outside the Country for More Than 6 Months. Conditions from the ICP service card:

  1. You apply from outside the UAE.
  2. You apply after completing 180 days abroad. Early applications are not accepted.
  3. Your visa has more than 30 days of validity left on the application date.
  4. You give a valid reason and attach proof. u.ae names study, work and treatment.
  5. ICP decides in 2 days. You must enter within 30 days, approval day included.

Channels: the ICP website and the UAEICP app, with UAE Pass login. If a company sponsors you, either of you can file.

Dubai. GDRFA runs its own service, Return Permit for Resident outside UAE More than 6 months. Reasons come from a list: study, health, crisis or disaster, other. Attach your Emirates ID, passport and proof of the reason. The permit is valid for one month from approval and cannot outlast the visa. We found no official GDRFA fee.

The ICP fee. The smart service costs AED 100. ICP words the fine in two ways. The service conditions say AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside the UAE. The fee table on the same card says AED 100 for each month of delay after 6 months. Khaleej Times reports that Dubai residents pay only for the days beyond 180. The calculator shows both ends of the range. ICP refunds the fine if it rejects the application.

Approval is at the authority's discretion.

If the visa is already void

u.ae puts it in one line: you "will have to apply for a new entry permit to enter the UAE again". That means a new visa from zero: sponsor, medical test, Emirates ID. You can enter on a visit visa, since the regulation allows a change of status inside the country for a fee.

The Emirates ID stops being valid together with the visa. Dependants follow the sponsor: under the u.ae rules, a family member's visa cannot run longer than the sponsor's.

Your bank account and tenancy depend on the bank and the landlord; no single rule covers them. A company owner who loses the visa faces licence renewal and signing authority issues next: see business and companies in the UAE.

In March 2026 ICP ran a one-off measure for residents whose visas expired abroad during the airspace closures. They could enter without a new visa until 31 March. Standard rules returned on 1 April. That measure did not touch the 180-day rule.

How to check your visa status

  • ICP: smartservices.icp.gov.ae, File Validity tab. Search by file number or passport details.
  • GDRFA: gdrfad.gov.ae, residence validity check on the home page.

An "Active" status on screen can lag behind the actual cancellation. After a long absence, confirm with the authority before you fly.

When a lawyer helps

  1. You missed the deadline and your reason is not on the standard list. The wording and the supporting documents decide the outcome.
  2. You hold an investor or partner visa. The law contains the exception, practice varies, and the company licence is at stake.
  3. The authority refused the permit. The route to a new visa depends on what you still have in the UAE: visa ended with no basis to renew.

FAQ

How long can I stay outside the UAE with a residence visa?

Up to 180 days in a row. Article 59 of the regulation under Decree-Law 29 of 2021 voids the permit once the stay abroad exceeds 180 consecutive days. The law counts days, not calendar months. The border system voids the visa automatically, with no notice.

Is one day in the UAE enough to reset the 6 months outside rule?

Yes. The rule covers continuous absence only, and no text sets a minimum stay. You need an entry through passport control; the system does not record sterile-zone transit.

Does the 180-day rule apply to the Golden Visa?

No. ICP states that Golden, Green and Blue residence holders may enter at any time while the residence remains valid. So may the husband of a UAE national woman under her sponsorship. Their only limit is the visa's expiry date.

How do I get a re-entry permit for the UAE after 6 months abroad?

ICP issues it in six emirates and GDRFA in Dubai. You apply from outside the UAE, after 180 full days abroad, with a documented valid reason. ICP decides in 2 days and gives 30 days to enter. After a refusal you apply for a new visa.

How much does the UAE re-entry permit cost?

The ICP smart service costs AED 100, plus a fine of AED 100 per 30 days. ICP describes the base of the fine in two ways: the whole absence, or only the time beyond six months. For 223 days abroad that means AED 300 to AED 900. ICP refunds the fine after a rejection.

Does the 180-day rule apply to an investor visa?

Article 60 of the regulation lists investors with valid residence visas among the exceptions, and u.ae repeats it. Many practitioner sources say the authorities do not apply the exception to a standard two-year partner visa. No official clarification exists, so check your file with ICP or GDRFA before you travel.
